Paula Modersohn-Becker – Head of a Blond Girl in Front of a Landscape, 1901 (cat. 14) Although Becker made extensive use of the local landscape and people in her work, many of her ideas about form, composition and texture were not embraced by the group and she had to experiment in seclusion. Modersohn-Becker is the subject of a new biography, Being Here Is Everything, written by the French novelist Marie Darrieussecq, translated beautifully by Penny Hueston, and released in the United States last September by Semiotext (e). The book builds on the first English monograph of her work, written by the art historian Diane Radycki in 2012. Paula Modersohn-Becker was born in Dresden in 1876. She moved to Bremen with her family in 1888. After completing her studies at a teacher training college, she enrolled in an academy of drawing and painting in Berlin.

She frequently stayed in Paris and saw the work of modern artists there, like paintings of Cézanne and early Henri Matisse 's. Biography Heir to the Romanticism of 19th-Century German Art, Paula Modersohn-Becker joined the North German artist colony of Worpswede, before spending time in Paris where she discovered French Post-Impressionism as well as Van Gogh's style of Expressionism. Born in Dresden, Modersohn-Becker studied in Berlin from 1896 to 1898, then moved to Worpswede, an artists’ community north of Bremen. There she met her husband, the artist Otto Modersohn, as well as the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who became a close companion.
