The closest I could find was a three.js demo that displayed an equirectangular panorama. While it worked for the one image, everything was hard-coded, it lacked user friendly controls, and was missing basic features. For final deployment, it is recommended that one use a minified copy of Pannellum instead of using the source files in src directly. The easiest method is to download the most recent release and use the pre-built copy of either pannellum.htm or pannellum.js & pannellum.css. pannellum v2.5.6.

I ended up with around 340 lines of HTML/CSS and 380 lines of Javascript with a 200 line shell script to generate the JSON file. URL parameters are used to configure Pannellum. If an equirectangular image is being used without some of Pannellum’s more advanced features, Pannellum can be configured with just URL parameters; else, a JSON configuration file needs to be used with the config. Pannellum looks like a great piece of software and it is almost what I search for. The only restriction that prevents my use case is that it cannot be run from local file system since js has no access to local files outside the DOM scope.
