In both studies we found that applying ideas of ‘scaffolding’ and the ZPD to symmetrical learning required the re-conceptualization of these concepts as characterizations of dynamic processes within dialogues. Vygotsky was a Russian Jew who worked as a literary critic and schoolteacher before turning to psychology. A brief overview of his life and work is included in the Encyclopedia of Creativity (Gajdamaschko, 1999) and in the first volume of his collected works (1987). ‘scaffolding’ can be applied to understand how these groups of children use language to support shared thinking and learning.
